Can you use ChatGPT for college applications?

You can use ChatGPT to research colleges, brainstorm essay ideas and check grammar, but you should not submit text it writes as your own, which the Common App treats as fraud. ChatGPT is a general assistant, and OpenAI warns it can make mistakes, so check every deadline and requirement on the college's own page.

What ChatGPT is good for

ChatGPT helps most with the thinking around your application, not the writing of it:

  • Understanding the process. Ask it to explain terms such as Early Decision, need-blind or the Common App's activities section, then confirm on official pages.
  • Brainstorming. Ask questions that help you find your own stories for the personal essay.
  • Practicing. Rehearse interview answers, or use study mode, which OpenAI launched in July 2025 for step-by-step guidance, to prepare for the SAT or ACT.
  • Checking your writing. Spelling and grammar checks on a finished essay, where your colleges allow it.

What the rules allow

The Common App fraud policy counts submitting "the substantive content or output of an artificial intelligence platform" as your own work as fraud. Colleges add their own rules: Brown allows AI only for spelling and grammar, and Cornell also allows brainstorming topics but not outlining, drafting or translating an essay. Read what each college allows before you start.

Where a general chatbot stops

OpenAI describes ChatGPT as a general assistant and does not list college-application features, and its own pages carry the note "ChatGPT can make mistakes. Check important info." For applications, that means:

  • Facts need checking. Confirm every deadline, test policy and requirement on the college's own website or the Common App.
  • The structure is yours to keep. A general chatbot does not check your list's balance of reach, target and safety schools or plan your timeline unless you set that up yourself.
  • The words must be yours. Use it for ideas and checks, never for the sentences you submit.
