Need-blind colleges for international students (2026-27)

Ten US colleges confirm on their official pages that, for the 2026-27 cycle, they admit international first-year applicants without regard to their ability to pay and meet 100% of demonstrated need: Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton, Amherst, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Washington and Lee, Notre Dame and Brown. Each has its own rules on when to ask for aid and what it covers.

Need-blind admission means the college decides whether to admit you without looking at whether your family can pay. Meeting full need means that, once you are admitted, the college covers the gap between its cost and what your family can pay.

The verified list

All ten colleges below confirmed on their official pages, checked in September 2026, that they admit international first-year applicants need-blind and meet full need for the 2026-27 cycle. Each row links to the page it was checked against.

Full need, but not need-blind

Stanford meets the full demonstrated need of every admitted student who applied for aid. For international applicants, though, asking for aid is a factor in admission, which makes it more selective. If you say you will not apply for aid, you cannot apply later.

Why other lists disagree

Colleges describe themselves with counts that do not match. Dartmouth called itself the sixth such US college in 2022. Today MIT says it is one of nine, Notre Dame one of ten and Bowdoin one of eleven. Articles copy these counts, and policies change: Brown joined in 2025. Trust a list only if each row links to the college's own page and has a date.

Need-blind does not mean free

Need-blind is about admission. What you pay depends on the aid formula. A family that can pay part of the cost pays that part, and that share is what it shows as proof of funds for the I-20. If you do not apply for aid, you pay the full cost.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which universities are need-blind for international students?

For 2026-27, Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton, Amherst, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Washington and Lee, Notre Dame and Brown (first-years) confirm it on their official pages, and all meet full need.

Is Stanford need-blind for international students?

No. Stanford is need-aware for international applicants, but it meets full need for those it admits who applied for aid.

Does need-blind cover transfer students?

Not always. Brown is need-aware for transfers, and Bowdoin gives no aid to international transfers. Amherst treats international transfers like first-years, and Notre Dame offers them need-based aid.

Do I need to apply for aid when I apply for admission?

Yes, at most of these colleges. At Stanford and Washington and Lee, you cannot ask for aid later, and Yale takes international aid applications only at admission.
